Leading The Pack: Defending Champ Veitmeier Back on Top After Day 3

A familiar face has made its way back to the top of the leader board in the second annual adidas Golf - MAXFLI International. While it took three days to find the top of the board, Gordon Veitmeier has put himself in a great position now to repeat as champion.

Veitmeier fired a 3-under par 69 on Friday's third day of competition, following his Thursday round of 64 and vaulting himself ahead of two-day leader Dick Smith, Jr. and into sole possession of the lead.

"My round turned out pretty good today," Veitmeier said afterwards. "I started out solid, hit a few bumps along the way, but overall played well enough to be in the lead I guess."

After shooting 8-under on Thursday, Veitmeier had an up-and-down round of eight birdies, 2 bogeys and one triple-bogey (Nicklaus #6).

"I struggled a little bit out there," he said. "But I was lucky enough to rebound from a few bad holes and make up for them with a couple of birdies."

Entering last year's final round, Veitmeier also found himslef at the top of the leader board, so this is no unfamiliar ground for the professional from Nevillewood CC in Pittsburgh, PA. That said, he realizes tomorrow that everyone else will be gunning for him and he'll have to be up to meet any challengers.

"It's great being out in front obviously," Veitmeier said. "But with that, you have to keep playing well if you want to remain on top. I'm just hoping to stay aggressive and hope to keep doing what I've been doing the last two days."

Now in its second year, a repeat champion here at the tournament would mean that Veitmeier is setting quite a precedent for future winners to live up to.
