Vietmeier Victorious

Pittsburgh Pro Wins Inaugural adidas Golf – Maxfli International

Despite the specter of seasoned veteran Lon Hinkle looming in his rearview mirror, Gordon Vietmeier shot an even-par 72 on the Weiskopf to capture the first-ever adidas Golf – Maxfli International by a shot.

Though Vietmeier started the day in the lead by five, things got interesting when he gave three shots back to par on consecutive holes with a double-bogey on 11 and bogey at 12. Yet 12 could have been worse – after finding a fairway bunker and missing the green to the right, he chipped through the putting surface, and eventually sank a four-footer to salvage a five. The turning point came at the par-three 15th when he hit an 8-iron to 14 feet and dropped the birdie putt.

Ahead, Hinkle was applying pressure with birdies of his own on 17 and 18 that cut the lead to one. But Vietmeier countered with a par on the long par-four 16th after a strong, long drive, then birdied 17 to increase his lead to two. A three-putt bogey on the final hole was disappointing (“That was ugly!” he exclaimed as he left the green) but good enough to win the tournament.

As for Hinkle, a four-birdie, no bogey final round of 68 left him just short. Three of his birdies came on par fives that he’d hit in two. “I had all the chances in the world to make a move, but I just couldn’t get the ball in the hole,” he said with a grin. “I didn’t miss many shots out there – but I didn’t make many putts.”

As for Vietmeier, he won both of the week’s big events, the Fujikura Shootout and the adidas Golf – Maxfli International on this his first trip to Mexico. Odds are good it won’t be his last.

Team Nuckolls Triumphs in Team Competition

Though they had slipped to second place yesterday after leading the team competition through the first two round, the team of Rod Tom Copeland, Jeff Skalesky and Mike and Mark Marney was positive going into the Friday. “Our goal was to shoot 23-under,” said Copeland. Though they missed their target by one, their 22-under total gave them a two-shot margin of victory.

Key to their win the team’s strong final-round performance on the greens. “We made a lot of clutch putts today,” said Nuckolls. “It seemed like whenever we were in a situation with one guy left with a chance to sink a key putt, he always seemed to make it.”

But maybe more important to their win was a driving range lesson from Jim Flick. “Mike had a frustrating day yesterday, and took a lesson from Jim afterward that made a big difference,” said Mark Marney. “Not only that, I listened in and picked up a tip that made an impact on my game, too. I’d have to say that we saved five or six shots today thanks to Mr. Flick.”
