Vietmeier Ups Lead to Five

Moving day at the adidas Golf – Maxfli brought no change to the top of the leader board as second-round leader Gordon Vietmeier weathered an up-and-down third round on the Nicklaus Course that was good enough to get him down to 10-under-par and increase his lead to five.

“My rhythm was a little off and I didn’t hit the ball as solidly as the first two days,” said Vietmeier. “Some of the tees were up, which took driver out of my hands. That’s the best club in my bag, and not being able to use it as much made me a little uncomfortable.” His discomfort showed up most on the par-fives: Whereas yesterday he navigated them in four-under, today he ballooned to two-over. Still, solid chipping and timely putting helped him to grind his way to another red number, this time a one-under 71.

Lon Hinkle, who led after the first round, registered an even-par 72 today that moved him up to in solo second-place at six under, one shot ahead of Rod Nuckolls, whose 73 dropped him to five under for the tournament and third place. Jason Brown and Danny Mijovic, tied for fourth at two-under, are the only remaining players to have cracked par after the first three days.

With the start of the final round less than 12 hours away, the question is whether Vietmeier can withstand the heat, or if veteran competitor Hinkle, or persistent Knuckolls, or another professional in the top ten who catches lightning in a bottle can make a strong enough move to become the first-ever champion of the adidas Golf – Maxfli Invitational.

Team Brown Takes Over the Top of the Leader Board

As predicted, the adidas Golf – Maxfli International team competition got hot today as the lead changed hands for the first time in the tournament. Jason Brown’s squad, which includes Tom Avery, Larry Davis, James Dorough and Milt Glasser, turned in a solid third-round score of 125 to claim first place from Team Knuckolls, which had led the event through the first two rounds. However, Team Brown’s lead is a slim three shots – essentially an eyelash in team play. Also in reasonable striking distance is the third place team led by Adam Oates’ and which includes Brad Barnett, Tom Cismoski, Chuck Swisshelm and Jose Miraflor; they stand eight shots back.

Professional Scores for 54 Holes as of Thursday, December 1, 2005.
