Vietmeier Surges to a Four-Shot Lead

Gordon Vietmeier had more than one good excuse to play lousy this week. Before to playing a round last weekend in Los Angeles, the Pittsburgh pro hadn’t touched a club in three weeks. During that time he started a house-painting project that still has him feeling sore. Not only had he never seen either course, he’d never been to Mexico. No matter. Playing the Nicklaus Course, Vietmeier smoked the course like a good cigar with second-round 64 that brought him down to 10-under for the event and which vaulted him up to the top of the leader board.

“I didn’t leave too many out there,” he said of his 10 birdie- two bogey effort. Although the Nicklaus Course is considered the tougher Vista Vallarta two tracks, Vietmeier plays frequently at another Nicklaus track, The Club at Nevillewood, where he is director of instruction. He noted that his familiarity with the kinds of “humps and bumps” common to Nicklaus’ work definitely helped today.

Trailing Vietmier by four shots is the first-round leader Lon Hinkle, whose 74 at the Weiskopf was ten shots higher than his first-round score, and Rod Nuckolls, who followed his opening round 66 with an even par 72, also at the Weiskopf. Only four other players managed to finish under par or even after two rounds – Danny Mijovic at two-under, Cary Hungate at one-under, and Jason Brown and Mark Dewdney at even par.

Attempting to hold them off tomorrow will be Pittsburgh pro Vietmeier, who despite having legitimate excuses for losing, also has a powerful incentive to hang on for victory. “If I win it,” he says with a laugh, “I can have somebody else finish painting the house for me.”

Team Nuckolls Remains in First

At the halfway point, the squad led by professional Rod Nuckolls, first-round leaders in the team competition, followed its opening day score of 119 with a second-round 129 that was good enough to increase its cushion by six shots. Moving into second place was Jason Brown’s team at 254, followed by Cary Hungate’s team at 258. Meanwhile, individual leader Gordon Vietmeier’s low-round-of-the-day 64 helped to hoist his group into the hunt; they’re tied for fourth at 258 along with teams led by Adam Oates and Jin Park. Lurking just behind them at 260 are teams captained by Mark Dewdney, Michael Jack and Lon Hinkle. With the third round – “moving day” – looming, all are in the thick of it, as the team competition is without a doubt just beginning to heat up.
